    Multiply fractions by integers.
When possible, simplify results or convert fractions into mixed numbers or integers.

    πŸ™‚ = Correct, ☹️ = Incorrect

    πŸ“Œ Rules

β€’ Multiply the top number by the integer: To multiply a fraction by a whole number, multiply the numerator (top number) by the integer and keep the denominator (bottom number) the same. Imagine 4 children each having 2/3 of a chocolate bar. You calculate 2 Γ— 4 = 8 to get 8/3.

β€’ Convert or simplify your answer: If your answer is an improper fraction, convert it into a mixed number or whole integer. For 8/3, divide 8 by 3 to get 2 whole bars with 2 parts left over, which gives 2 2/3.

    πŸ’‘ Tips

β€’ Think of multiplication as repeated addition: Doing 2/3 Γ— 4 is the exact same as adding 2/3 + 2/3 + 2/3 + 2/3 = 8/3, which makes it easy to check your work!

β€’ Quick typing on our platform: Typing your answer is designed to be super quick and simple! Just type plain numbers and a forward slash like 8/3 or 2 2/3 without adding any commas or spaces.

    ⚠️ Warnings

β€’ Do not multiply the bottom number: Multiplying 2/3 Γ— 4 does not mean doing 3 Γ— 4 = 12 on the bottom. Writing 8/12 is incorrect because the size of the pieces does not change!

β€’ Remember to simplify or convert: Leaving an answer as 8/3 when the question asks for a mixed number or simplified fraction might cost you marks. Always check if you can write it as 2 2/3.
