Fractions and percentages.
Real life is full of quick decisions based on percentages and fractions β but do you know how to switch between them? Dive into these daily dilemmas and show just how sharp your number sense really is.
π = Correct, βΉοΈ = Incorrect
π Rules
β’ Convert percentages to fractions: Write the percentage over 100 as a fraction, then divide the numerator and denominator by their highest common factor to simplify. For example, 35% = 35/100 = 7/20, and 60% = 60/100 = 3/5.
β’ Convert fractions to percentages: Multiply the fraction by 100% or adjust the fraction to have a denominator of 100. For example, 4/5 = 80/100 = 80%, and 3/8 = 37.5%.
β’ Calculate fractional or percentage amounts of a quantity: Divide the amount by the denominator and multiply by the numerator (for fractions), or build up from 10% and 1% (for percentages). For example, 15% of Β£80 is Β£8 + Β£4 = Β£12.
π‘ Tips
β’ Memorise key benchmark equivalents:
β 1/2 = 50%
β 1/4 = 25%, 3/4 = 75%
β 1/5 = 20%, 2/5 = 40%, 3/5 = 60%, 4/5 = 80%
β 1/10 = 10%, 1/100 = 1%
β 1/8 = 12.5%, 3/8 = 37.5%, 5/8 = 62.5%, 7/8 = 87.5%
β’ Quick typing on our platform: Typing your answer is designed to be super quick and simple! For fractions, use a forward slash like 7/20 or 3/5. For percentages or values, type plain digits like 35, 80, or 12 without adding percentage signs (%), currency symbols (Β£), or spaces.
β οΈ Warnings
β’ Always simplify fractions fully: Writing 35/100 or 60/100 instead of reducing to 7/20 or 3/5 will be marked incorrect!
β’ Pay attention to the target unit in the question: Make sure you answer in the exact form requestedβwhether as a simplified fraction, a percentage, or a specific total quantity.
